If you like chocolate, you will love this beer. Nearly 2 lbs. of crystal malt, paired with chocolate, debitterized black and carapils meld with 24 tablespoons of cocoa powder to make this a perfect marriage of beer and chocolate. We suggest Wyeast 1728 Scottish Ale yeast to add enough sweetness to balance the unsweetened chocolate. Want to kick it up a notch? Add a hint of raspberry flavoring. Note that this recipe calls for 1.5 cups of Cocoa Powder which is not included in the kit, but can be purchased at your local grocery store. Don't pick hot chocolate mix though!

I've turned domestic swill lovers to craft brews with this beer. Very smooth, a malt lovers delight. My wife begs me to make this!

Chocolate lovers delight
If you're wanting a smooth, full bodied beer that's definitely rich in chocolate flavor, and easy to brew then this is definitely the beer kit for you. Just like all other kits offered by Great Fermentations it is a snap to brew out on your brew day. What was surprising to me was the fact the flavors are blended well and smooth. Unlike some porters I've brewed or even drank by fellow Brewers this wasn't bitter or harsh in after taste. I highly recommend this kit and will definitely add this to my short list of kegerator brews.

Great Porter!
I just kegged this beer after brewing it about 4 weeks ago. It is smooth with a rich chocolate flavor and some coffee tones. It is nicely balanced and the flavors have been developing with each passing week. It'll be interesting to see how much better it tastes in 2 months after some additional time conditioning, considering how fantastic the flavor is already! I'll definitely be brewing this one again.

Owner Response: Glad you are enjoying the Chocoholic Porter, Dave! Cheers and thanks for the review!
Possibly the perfect chocolate porter
I have been trying a number of chocolate porter recipes from a variety of places without much luck on what I consider a truly great one. I brewed this Dec 6th following all instructions and directions exactly as far as times and temps. It is a fairly simple and straight forward recipe. I never transferred it to a secondary. I bottled it Jan 17th and tried the first one 10 days after bottling. Now, hang on here and keep reading. This beer smelled AWESOME when I bottled it. The first one I tried 10 days after bottling was, to be honest, really "not great", and I was disappointed (very) because it had smelled so good when I bottled. Last night (Feb 2), I cracked another...and WOW!!!! Somewhere, somehow in the span of about a week, this beer magically became one of THE BEST chocolate porters I have ever had! If you are thinking about brewing this because you like chocolate porters DO IT!!!! You WILL NOT be disappointed. But leave it to condition a little longer than a usual beer! I have a second batch in progress, and WILL be making this a REGULAR. My wife loves it, and a couple friends who help with "quality control" love it. The first batch will not last long. FANTASTIC beer! Thank you Great Fermentations for an easy, reasonably priced, EXCELLENT chocolate porter!
