Hard spiles are used in casks to maintain carbonation in cask conditioned beers. These are inserted into the shive of the firkin or pin when the proper level of carbonation has been reached. When tapping a firkin or cask, this hard spile can be replaced by a soft spile so that gas can be released from the cask and a vacuum is not created, inhibiting flow. Spiles should be disposed of after use.
