Soft spiles are used in cask conditioned beers to vent excess gas during the conditioning process. They can also be used during serving to allow just the right amount of gas to escape during pouring, so a vacuum is not created in the cask. These are inserted into the shive of the firkin or pin during conditioning. Once the proper amount of carbonation is reached, they are replaced with a hard spile to maintain carbonation levels until tapping. Once tapped, a soft spile can be reinserted for serving. Spiles should be disposed of after use.
