Surtr is the legendary fire giant from Norse mythology. We thought it was the perfect name for our new Norwegian smoked ale, brewed as closely to ancient specifications as possible! This beer utilizes Indiana-grown red cedar in the steeping grains, as the Vikings use to do it! It also does not follow a hopping schedule that we would think of as normal, instead being steeped before the boil. This is to mimic the wort being run through the hops on the way to the boil kettle in olden times. We use Stjordal malt, which is produced in the Sainnhus of Sugar Creek Malting Company of Lebanon, IN. This malt, made the way that smoked malts were made a millenia ago, gives this beer a unique character. We strongly recommend using a Kveik yeast to ferment this beer. This yeast has a wide temperature range and has been used in the Nordic farmhouses since time immemorial. This beer is fit for Ragnarok!
