Irish moss is a fancy name for a red seaweed called carrageen which can clump together proteins from the hot break. These proteins, if left in solution, can cause beer to be hazy and cause staling. Irish moss helps these to settle out of solution when added at the last 20 minutes of the boil. An excellent clarifying agent that helps brewers achieve crystal-clear beers.

cheap ziplock
The product if fine, but it comes in a cheap ziplock bag that is very difficult to reseal. When you first get it, I recommend transferring the entire contents into your own container, otherwise the bag's going to break open on you, and you'll have spilt Irish Moss all over the place.

Great clarifying agent, and VERY cost-effective!
4 oz of carrageen lasts quite a long time--24 five-gallon batches of beer, as a matter of fact. This little $5 bag lasted a few years for me. Hmm--perhaps I should brew more often...? Anyway, my beers always came out crystal clear and bright. Highly recommended. Oh, yes--the bag IS flimsy, but it lasted throughout the entire life of the product for me. I guess YMMV.
